Soap Scum and Credit Cards

What a title!  It will all make sense...I hope.

One of the very first things that sold me on our house was the master bathroom.  It spoke to me.  It was a grown up bathroom.  Not a dinky apartment bathroom (which is what we were moving FROM).  It has a glorious jet bathtub, a huge vanity with bright lights, and a big spacious shower (it has a toilet too....but the other amenities were more important to me).  When we first moved in I think I took 4-5 big bubble baths a day.  I filled the bathroom with candles and it became a haven of relaxation.

Eventually the new wore off, I was expected back at my 40hr a week job, and showering daily was more feasible than bubble baths.  The shower has perks too.  Great water pressure...perfect even.  A little built in seat so you can sit and shower (how lazy it THAT?!?!?!).  I prefer to use the seat as a leg prop when I shave, and Ethan enjoys standing on it so he can shower like a man!  Overall, it's a rockin shower.

Then I began to notice something.  Scum.  Soap Scum.  This wasn't just any soap scum.  This was Guinness book of world records soap scum.  I tried EVERYTHING!  I bought every cleaner known to man, I even ordered special cleaners from the guy on as seen on TV commercials.  I bought special brushes, special sponges, Brillo pads, magic erasers.  Nothing worked.  I searched the Internet for solutions to eradicate the scum.  None of the Internets solutions worked.  What's a girl to do?  Since paying attention to the soap scum wasn't working I set out to just ignore it.  I started using our dinky guest bathroom shower.  It didn't have a soap scum problem.

A few months back one of the blogs I read did a tutorial on how to clean your shower with a credit card.  WHAT?!?!?  How in the world does that work?  I read the blog and told myself that the credit card method wouldn't work on my superman soap scum.  I filed the tip in an unknown region of my brain and continued to ignore the beast in the shower.

Last week I started spring cleaning.  I've cleaned out all our closets, the garage, organized, scrubbed, and really given our house a major deep clean.  I have been pleased with my efforts...except for the shower.  I tried to ignore it.  Really tried.  My plan was to continue ignoring it.

Then I got mad about something.  I had the choice of screaming into a pillow, punching a wall, scream at undeserving people, throw a temper tantrum, or take out my aggression on the scum.  I'm an overachiever so I screamed into a pillow, yelled at innocent bystanders, threw a temper tantrum, AND searched my wallet for an old debit/credit card so I could kill some scum.
It worked.  The credit card tackled the scum perfectly.  I sprayed the shower with scrubbing bubbles and then began to scrap off all the soap scum with the credit card.  What was once an embarrassing shower plagued with scum turned into a bright and shiny clean masterpiece.  I have a shower to be proud of again.

It takes some elbow grease, a credit/debit card you don't plan on using again, and a little bit of cleaner and your outcome will be a sparkling shower.  A little bit of built up anger doesn't hurt either.  It was a win/win situation for me.  I have a clean shower using stuff I already had at home, and it gave me a way to take out my frustrations.  Perfection.

Are you plagued with soap scum?  Tackle it with a credit card!

  1. It works even better if you do the scraping without wetting it with cleaner. Dry flakes of scum come off and then you can use cleaner to finish. A straight long razor blade even works better - with a bit more risk. I have been doing it this way for years.
